What renters insurance costs — estimates, not quotes

Many landlords require renters insurance before you move in. This page shows what renters in your state actually paid, what individual companies charged in published Ohio surveys, and where to go to get a real price. RivoRent does not sell insurance and cannot quote you — only an insurer can do that.

🛡️ Estimated cost in your state

Estimated range for Ohio at $20,000 – $24,999 of personal property

$13–$16/ monthEstimate — not a quote

About $165–$184 a year.

Based on what Ohio renters actually paid: NAIC industry data for 2023 (average HO-4 premium, 756,038 policy-years), adjusted to July 2026 with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics tenants' insurance index. It is a market average, not a price for any particular home and not a price for you.

Your own price depends most on your credit-based insurance score, your claims history and which carrier you choose. In published Ohio figures the same coverage ranges from $127 a year at excellent credit to $933 at poor credit. We do not ask for any of that, so we cannot narrow this for you.

How this range is worked out

NAIC collects every tenant (HO-4) policy written in the state and reports the average premium for each band of cover. For Ohio in 2023 that is 756,038 policy-years across 15 bands, and 158,895 policy-years in the band selected above. The range you see is that band together with the bands immediately either side of it — a measured spread over real, adjacent coverage levels in the same market, not a margin we invented.

Those figures describe 2023, so they are carried forward to July 2026 by the change in the BLS tenants' insurance index (153.264174.868, a factor of 1.141). That adjustment is a national one: BLS publishes this index only for the U.S. city average, and there is no Ohio, Midwest or Cleveland version of it.

Nothing else is applied. Deductible steps, ZIP-code differences and credit ladders published by other companies are not multiplied into this number, even though doing so would make it look more precise. Each of those ratios was measured on a different policy by a different firm, and stacking them would manufacture a precision that exists in none of them.

What carriers charged in published Ohio surveys

These are averages published by third-party surveys, each for one fixed coverage scenario, on the date shown. They are not quotes. They do not reflect your address, your credit or your claims history, and they will go out of date before the next survey is published. They do not change when you change the options above.

The same renter can pay 4.1 times as much depending only on which company they buy from — $167 against $687 a year for identical coverage. That is why it is worth getting more than one quote.

Get a real quote

A real price needs your address, the cover you want and your own history. Only the insurer can work that out. Getting two or three is the single most useful thing on this page.

Each link goes to that company's own quote form. RivoRent does not sell insurance, is not an agent or broker, receives no commission, and never sees your quote.

Where these numbers come from

These figures are refreshed by hand. Each one carries the date or data year of the source that published it, so you can see for yourself how old it is. If a source stops publishing a figure, we remove it rather than carry it forward under a newer date.
